The first Rotary club was founded in 1905 when four friends met in Chicago to discuss how they could work together to the help the wider community. Little could they have imagined that a century or so later Rotary would have grown internationally to become a service organisation of more than 1.2 million members across 200 countries.
Today Rotary continues to respond to the needs of an ever-changing world, while retaining its strong founding principles which are reflected in the Rotary International motto – Service above Self.
In a letter to Rotarians worldwide Immediate Past President of Rotary International, KR Ravindran, writes of Rotarians aspiring to great deeds and admiring those who gave great gifts to humanity. He cites Abraham Lincoln, who gave the gift of human dignity to the downtrodden, and Mother Teresa, who gave the gift of compassion to the forgotten. But we all have a choice, he says: whether to keep our gifts to ourselves or give them to others.
Why not consider joining Harpenden Village Rotary Club or perhaps volunteering time to help one of our events?
